How To Train Your Solitary Healing Unit

In Fire Emblem Awakening there are many classes to choose from that allow each unit to specialize in certain types of weaponry and abuse certain skills that can be very helpful on the battlefield. Units use their weapons to gain experience and increase their weapon rank which in turn allows them to use better weapons. Healing is itself categorized as a weapon type and in most cases is able to be used in conjunction with another type of offensive weapon. Two classes however, the Cleric/ Priest and Troubadour do not have that option and are relegated to healing alone. While healing is very useful, it does not give very much experience and is not needed in every situation making such solitary healing units defenseless and more of a burden in a lot of cases. Cleric/ Priest and Troubadour are base classes which means they can promote to a better option at level 10, getting them there can be kind of a pain, but I finally figured out a method to do so without taking the entire campaign to get there.

Lissa and Maribelle actually the only solitary healing units you are given throughout the entire game. Since they show up fairly early (Lissa in the prologue, and Maribelle in chapter 5) it's relatively easy to get them to level 10 by the time Master Seals and Second Seals start becoming available if you simply keep them out of danger and heal off every minor bump and scratch along the way even if you don't really need to. Now the only reason you would want to re-class a character into a solitary healing unit would be for the skills they acquire there. Miracle and Heal Touch are quite good while Renewal (picked up in the War Monk/ War Cleric promotion) is amazing as it regenerates 30% of your HP at the end of every turn.

To get any reclassed units through their defenseless stage with relative ease, follow these steps. First off, make sure you have Olivia in your party and do not promote her so she stays in her Dancer class allowing you to give another unit an extra action per turn. Next go to any map that has the story fight cleared and has Risen to fight either by random generation or a Reeking Box. I prefer Arena Ferox as there are no obstacles, but any map will do. Now load up your solitary healing unit with 3 or 4 Heal staves, bring Olivia, and a few competent units that will be able to clear the field. It is important that you check the map before you begin and find at least 1 enemy mage unit to fight as this is what will allow you to perform an infinite healing loop. From this point begin the map and route all enemies except that one mage unit. The best way to avoid killing it on accident is to make sure any unit of yours entering it's range is holding a weapon that cannot attack long range as mages will always stand at a distance to attack if possible. With only the mage left, move all of your offensive units out of range and position Olivia and your healing unit next to each other in it's range. The mage will attack Olivia as she is the biggest threat since she can carry a weapon, but your healer cannot. Now begins the infinite loop, the mage attacks Olivia, you heal her, she dances, you heal again if you can and so on either until the mage runs out of magic, they usually have 25, or you finish leveling. If the mage runs out of magic and you're still not done leveling, simply start the process again from the beginning. Now that you have reached level 10, you can promote them to a War Monk/ War Cleric where they gain access to axes and can now defend themselves on their own. Happy level grinding.
